Cakes for Cause
Provides job training and real work experience to youth who have aged out of foster care or who will age out, or who are currently being served by the local Housing Authority in the North Market Revitalization Area of Frederick, Maryland.
Many children entering adulthood lack the resources, the nurturing, and the access to become contributing members of their neighborhoods and communities. Some have spent years in foster care, others are in youth adjudication programs. Some are coming of age in neighborhoods where hope is in short supply, and dreams might seem beyond reach. Cakes for Cause offers opportunity and empowerment for these vulnerable youth. A carefully designed program of hands-on vocational experience, instruction in the skills of finding and keeping a rewarding job, and the chance to work side by side with caring adults is a recipe for success. In our pilot social enterprise–Moxie Bakery & Cafe–our apprentices have daily exposure in maintaining professional standards while providing high quality goods and services to their neighbors. We believe young people deserve an opportunity. We believe that we have a responsibility to teach them how to function as citizens, parents, and workers.
