About Us

Spoke the Hub Dancing, Inc. (STH), incorporated in 1979, by Artistic Director Elise Long, is a not-for-profit dance and multi-purpose community arts organization serving the Park Slope/Gowanus areas of Brooklyn. Spoke the Hub’s mission is to nurture both individual and community health and happiness through open access to the arts. STH provides both artists and the general public with affordable, creative arts study, contemplation, and practice opportunities of the highest caliber.

STH provides dance, art and wellness classes to all ages; performance, exhibition and teaching opportunities for artists of all genres; and low-cost rehearsal, performance and social gathering spaces to artists and the general public.

Over more than thirty years, STH has created scores of special Brooklyn community arts events featuring diverse local talent. These include the Local Produce (LP) Festival of the Performing Arts, LP Winter Follies, LP in the Gardens Series, Gowanus Wildlife Preserve Showcases, Gowanus Guest Room Concert Series, Gowanathon Art Marathons, Works on the Wall Art Exhibits, NY Matters Documentary Film Series, Recycled Fashion Shows, Capricorn’s Birthday Bashes, Martin Luther King Jr. "Peace Finding and Keeping" Workshops, “Miles of Tiles” Continuing Mosaic Projects, and the original, intergenerational “folk dances” of STH Director, Elise Long.

STH also runs a year-round school employing over thirty teaching artists who offer a culturally diverse array of movement and arts classes to infants through seniors, and provides affordable services to the community through an active scholarship program geared toward children of color and a work/study and barter program for teens and adults.
