The JBRPC supports parkland in Jamaica Bay and the Rockaway peninsula through various means including public programming, park restoration projects, volunteer stewardship programs, curriculum-based education programs, and capital planning and construction. In 2020, the JBRPC expects significant growth in our educational portfolio and outreach. An important piece of our educational portfolio is our Coastal Habitat Heroes program, supported by the National Park Foundation’s Every Kid Outdoors Initiative (EKO). This initiative ensures that 4 th graders are eligible for a free pass to every national park for themselves and their families for a year through curriculum based learning and field trips. Our program for 4th graders, Coastal Habitat Heroes, is a hands-on introduction to the flora and fauna of Jamaica Bay, and the threat this ecosystem faces from marine debris. Students participate in citizen science and coastal stewardship through hands-on activities including beach seining and participation in a shoreline cleanup during their field trip. Their field trip is complemented by a NYS-standard aligned pre-and post-lesson package we provide to teachers. We are looking for enthusiastic, qualified volunteers to support our field trips!
