New Britain ROOTS
ROOTS is a community-engaged non-profit dedicated to promoting food security. We make healthy food accessible and affordable to our low-income neighbors. We work with Connecticut farmers, food artisans and healthy food advocates. We learn from, work with, and teach with people of all ages. ROOTS provides education programs for elementary and high school students on food justice, sustainable farming, and empowered eating practices.
Elementary students receive educational programs before, during, and after school on nutrition through our Food Crops member. High school students have an opportunity to join the after school program on food justice where they will also be able to work on the mobile market. If they choose to continue on high schoolers can work in the summer through our youth work training where they can gain experience on our partner farm Urth Farms or the mobile farmers market.
Our mobile farmers market provides both affordability and access to healthy foods in low-income neighborhoods. We make stops in the community where access to healthy food is limited. Our mobile market partners with other organizations like community health centers, schools, and youth programs to make it easier to shop while individuals are at these locations. The mobile farmers market also accepts SNAP (formerly food stamps) and also Doubles it so participants can make their SNAP dollars stretch for the month.
