About Us

Welcome to Church of the Ascension, Sligo Parish. We invite you to visit us often, online and in Silver Spring, and to join us in your journey of faith.

The Church of Ascension is a growing, vibrant Episcopal parish of over 400 people of all ages and backgrounds. The worship includes traditional and contemporary services. The parish is committed to Christian education for all ages as well as ministries to serve the needs of the neighborhood and the world.

The Church of the Ascension is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, Region IV. The Diocese of Washington is a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States which is a member Church Denomination of The World-Wide Anglican Communion.

Founded as a mission of Grace Church, Silver Spring in the 1920's, the Church of the Ascension worships in a stone building completed in the 1930's in the style of early English village churches. The tranquil cruciform interior is enriched by brilliant stained glass memorial windows illustrating the life of Christ. The windows were created in the 1960's by Willet Studios of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A Parish Hall and Rectory were added to the grounds in the late 40's and early 50's.

Continuing programs of renovation are ongoing to maintain the beautiful gardens and our physical plant, with primary goals of providing accessibility for the handicapped.

Our church's mission statement is to cultivate the gifts of all the faithful and to nurture God's Kingdom in East Silver Spring, Maryland and beyond.

Church of the Ascension has countless exciting and fulfilling ministries and activities to offer you as you travel on your journey of faith.

We celebrate the Holy Eucharist on Sunday mornings at 8:00 and at 10:00. We also have healing services during the week. Please come by and visit us in person as well. We would love to meet you!
