About Us

Franciscan Mission Service helps lay Catholics prepare to serve on two-year international, one-year domestic and 1-2 week short-term mission opportunities. Just as St. Francis and Clare responded to God’s call in their time, those in FMS programs follow the call today to walk with the people who are poor, oppressed, or marginalized in Africa, Latin America, North America and the Caribbean. After completing an FMS program, alumni utilize their life-changing experience for the good of North American Church and society.

Our Mission

As Franciscan followers of Christ, we build partnerships with Catholic women and men who are inspired to live and serve in solidarity with economically poor communities across the globe -- and to bring the transformative experience of mission to North American societies and churches as advocates for peace, justice, reconciliation and care of creation.

Our Core Statements

  • We have faith in the transforming power of Christ's love in the world.

  • We believe the world is a grace place.

  • We believe in the absolute and fundamental dignity of each individual and creation.

  • We embrace Catholic Social Teaching as central to our faith and service.

  • We have confidence in the wisdom of poor communities.

  • We engage in a mission of presence, accompaniment, and advocacy.

  • We believe strong theological and cross-cultural training leads to respectful and effective mission service.

International Missioner Program

International missioners, ages 22-65, offer their skills to overseas communities by joining local initiatives striving for peace, justice and hope. The focus of FMS ministry is presence and accompaniment. Missioners live simply in solidarity with their community partners for 2 years of service; renewable up to 6 years.

Placements include: medical clinics, school meal programs, women’s cooperatives, arts and crafts, agriculture, educational and emotional support at shelters for those abandoned and abused, bible study and non-violence training, English classes, and tutoring are just a few of the options. We exclusively partner with religious Franciscans in mission.

A 3-month orientation and formation program at FMS headquarters in Washington, DC includes mission theology, scripture, Catholic social teaching, cross-cultural skills, the Franciscan tradition and more. As-needed language training follows in host country.

Short-Term Mission and Global Awareness Trips

Focused on raising awareness and cross-cultural understanding, these 7-14 day mission opportunities to Bolivia or Washington, DC expose participants to the economic and social realities faced by people and nurture an appreciation of different cultures and customs. By engaging with different ethnic groups, fair trade and artisan cooperatives, and human rights advocates participants will learn how to share their experiences and act as advocates for peace, justice, reconciliation and care for creation. Trips are open to the general public, but can be coordinated for a university or parish group.
