Camp Lakey Gap is a place for autistic people to find Community, Acceptance, and Purpose.
While there are differing approaches to supporting autistic clients, at Camp Lakey Gap there are a few basic tenets that guide our practice:
1. Every person has inherent value exactly as they are. We convey that message by providing opportunities for success and celebrating differences.
2. We emphasize changes in the environment and routine to accommodate the person, rather than attempting to change the person to fit in the environment and routine.
3. Our program is not a behavior modification program nor is it a mode of "treatment" or "therapy". While all of those things have their place and can be important aspects of our campers' lives, we are primarily concerned with offering a recreational experience for its own sake, recognizing the importance of recreation in achieving and maintaining a high quality of life.
