NEWARK-MONTCLAIR URBAN TEACHER RESIDENCY PROGRAM
The Newark-Montclair Urban Teacher Residency Program (NMUTR) was established to improve student achievement by coupling rigorous research-based teacher preparation with the concrete needs and realities of the Newark Public Schools. This program is one of 28 federally- funded teacher quality partnership programs across the nation which provides an innovative apprentice-based approach to teaching for individuals with a deep commitment to urban education, guided by three overarching themes of community, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Cohorts of teacher residents each participate in clinical apprenticeship with highly qualified fully supported mentor teachers who are experienced in the residents' areas of certification (dual-certification in elementary education and special education, mathematics education, or science education).
Residents simultaneously engage in rigorous coursework integrated with the clinical apprenticeship, through which they receive a master's degree and teacher certification. Upon successful completion of the Masters programs, candidates are given preferential advancement in the hiring process by the Newark Public Schools and receive full induction support in the first two years after they complete the residency program.
Intensive, carefully designed professional development and networking will support both novice and experienced teacher-mentors/coaches in the continued development of their knowledge and skills for teaching, mentoring/coaching, and ultimately improving student achievement.
The program offers two tracks of study:
Track I - Early Childhood (P-3), Elementary Education (K-5), and Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD). Program Duration: 15 Months. This track is designed for candidates with a Bachelor's degree in a liberal arts field (e.g. Sociology, History, English, Psychology).
Track II - Secondary level (K-12) in mathematics or field of science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science). Program Duration: 12 Months. This track is designed for candidates with a Bachelor's degree in math or a field of science.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:
Note: Candidates who have already completed a teacher education program that yielded a teaching certification are not eligible for this program.
