About Us

Paul Smith’s College, the College of the Adirondacks, is the only baccalaureate institution within New York State’s six-million-acre Adirondack Park. Founded in 1937 and located on Lower St. Regis Lake, Paul Smith’s history and location are the foundation for a unique opportunity in experiential learning.

Paul Smith was an Adirondack wilderness guide, hotelier and entrepreneur. When his son, Phelps, bequeathed the majority of his father’s estate to create a college, he envisioned an institution centered around the resources and industries of the Adirondacks. It was imperative that the college be open to all students, including those who might not otherwise be able to access a college education.

Today, the college represents that spirit in its programs and student body of 975 undergraduates. What began as an associate-degree-granting institution now offers a range of technical, professional baccalaureate and associate degree programs. More than 90 percent of Paul Smith’s students receive some form of financial assistance and many are the first in their families to earn a college degree.

Paul Smith’s is organized into three major academic units:

• School of Sciences, Liberal Arts and Business which instructs, mentors and supports students as they prepare to become successful leaders, entrepreneurs and leading edge environmental scientists.

• School of Hospitality, Resort and Culinary Management where faculty prepare graduates for successful careers at world-class resorts and restaurants.

• School of Forestry and Natural Resources where students are provided the tools to become foresters, surveyors and wildlife conservation experts and professionals in related fields.

Nine out of 10 graduates enter graduate school or find employment in their chosen field within six months of graduation. While many choose to begin their professional careers outside of the state, many stay in the area and become stewards of the beautiful and unique environment in which they live.

Its place in the Adirondack Park has positioned Paul Smith’s to understand the importance of protecting the environment for generations to come, while also encouraging and supporting economic development.

The college is governed by an active Board of Trustees and supported by an annual budget of $22 million.
