We are a non-profit farm+bakery dedicated to encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit of local youth through small-scale sustainable farming. Building upon the rich history of Appalachian farming, our goal is to enhance the knowledge of local youth by teaching them how to run and sustain a successful small business.
Launched in 2016 with a private foundation grant, our goal is to create good paying jobs and rewarding opportunities for local youth while teaching skills that can translate into successful future entrepreneurial endeavors. Fortunately, we get to provide fresh and healthy produce to the community in the process.
The market is more than a functioning farm and produce business, it is also the training grounds for aspiring young entrepreneurs and a classroom for volunteers and visitors.
Our paid youth Farm Assistants, all local high school students or recent grads, are part of every facet of the farm business. Their training experience is the highest priority at the farm. For many of them this is their first real job. They are taught a wide variety of skills including sustainable growing techniques, customer service, money management, hospitality, marketing, and environmental stewardship through hands on experience and mini-classes.
The historic Frye farm, located right off Wardensville’s Main Street, has been brought back to life as a bustling two-acre garden and farm market using the latest techniques related to small-scale, low-input, high-density, and sustainable farming.
All of our produce and plants are grown from heirloom and/or organic seeds and are raised using sustainable and organic agriculture techniques. To deal with pests and weeds we use homemade and organic insecticides. We have also introduced flowers that draw friendly bugs that are natural predators to undesirable insects. We even have our own beehive!
