About Us

Amigos de los Animales, Inc. is a US 501c(3) and 1101 Puerto Rico nonprofit rescue founded in 2005 to act as a voice for the abandoned, neglected, mistreated and abused companion animals on the island of Puerto Rico. Today we operate an animal shelter in one of the poorest areas on the island. Our dog rescue regularly houses approximately 60 to 70 dogs. We are located right outside the San Juan metropolitan area.

We envision a Puerto Rico where every pet has a home. By uniting with other rescuers on the island and educating the public on the importance of sterilization, we hope to continue to achieve this goal and a more humane Puerto Rico. We practice 'Trap Nutre Release' with both dogs and cats in our area, since it is a dumping ground for unwanted pets, as a way to diminish the suffering and pain of hundreds of thousand unwanted puppies and kittens. Also since 2010 we have given a yearly ACO/CI (animal control officer / cruelty investigation) certification course which to date is the only ACO/CI course certified on the island by the Puerto Rico Health Department in collaboration with Career Development Institute of New Jersey. Our past sponsors for this course have included ASPCA, Humane Society International, WISPA, PetSmart and individual grant donors. We rely on the generous donations of people like you to keep our shelter running so that our pets can be rehabilitated and put up for adoption.
