The Urban Institute of Mathematics

Bronx, NY

About Us

We are a new small middle school located in Throggs Neck. Realizing that the future global economy will need more mathematicians, Principal Jennifer Joynt, a former organic chemist, teacher, and math coach will opened up the Urban Institute of Mathematics, with 150 6th graders. "To compete in the global economy, they need numbers," said Joynt, noting that many jobs requiring advanced math and science skills are being outsourced to foreign countries, because the United States has an insufficient math and science labor force.

The school's curriculum will bring math skills into all subjects. In a history class, students studying different centuries will also look at how many years are in a century and create timelines; in English students will read books with a math focus, Joynt told Insideschools in a telephone interview. There will also be competitive math teams, and advanced level math courses will be available in 7th and 8th grades
