Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America (FORA) is a not-for-profit organization that empowers refugees by providing them with the educational resources needed to make a successful transition to the United States. Our vision is a world where migrants in need are welcomed and empowered. Our mission is to ensure that refugee families are provided access to an education sufficient to prepare them to become economically self-sufficient and robustly engaged in American civic life. Our strategy is to be located in the neighborhoods that we serve to make daily educational services easily available to newly-arrived refugees.
Before the pandemic, we had a center in the heart of West Ridge Community in Chicago where we provided intensive after-school tutoring for 30 recently-arrived K-12 refugee students with a 2-to-1 student-tutor ratio for two hours a day. Due to the pandemic, we have shifted to providing online tutoring to 60 recently-arrived K-12 refugee students with a 1-to-1 student-tutor ratio. We have been able to take on more kids and expand our services with the help of volunteers. Our curriculum is designed and implemented by a Ph.D. in child development.
All services are free. We currently have a long waiting list of students needing our services. Our ability to take on more students depends on volunteers!
