Wimberly's Roots Community Garden and Kitchen

  • Mission

At Wimberly’s Roots, our mission is to educate and empower the community through sustainable gardening and healthy cooking practices that improve food security in Winder and Barrow County. We bring our mission to life by partnering with local farmers, chefs, nutritionists, educators, and community volunteers—combining their expertise to offer hands-on gardening education, culinary workshops, and nutrition-focused programs that make fresh, healthy food more accessible to all.

    About Us

In 2016, the Winder Housing Authority transformed the vacant Winder-Barrow Middle School into the Wimberly Center for Community Development, a hub for community growth in the heart of the Glenwood neighborhood.

That same year, Winder received the prestigious Local Foods, Local Places award, helping launch Wimberly’s Roots as a cornerstone initiative focused on food access, sustainability, and nutrition education.

Located in a USDA-designated food desert, Wimberly’s Roots continues to drive positive change by empowering neighbors hrough produce distribution, gardening, healthy cooking, and community-based programs.
