The British Benevolent Society (The BBS) is made up of predominantly volunteer members, 15 of whom form a Board of Directors who manage the charity and its activities. Founded in 1858, during the Gold Rush, the BBS Board is focused on helping and supporting British Nationals residing in the Western United States. Clients are always desperate and quite literally have nowhere else to turn for help. The BBS relies on the support of a paid membership program and welcomes anyone who would like to join and help support its cause.
The BBS responds to appeals for one-time emergency assistance and, in unusual circumstances, provides longer term support. The list of reasons individuals apply for assistance is vast, and it isn’t difficult to imagine that any one of us could find ourselves in a situation where we need a little help.
The global pandemic has been one of the business periods in the rich history of the BBS. To date, the charity has provided more than $200,000 to Brits in need.
