About Us

The Massachusetts Alliance of HUD Tenants (MAHT) is a tenant-controlled alliance of resident organizations in HUD and MassHousing subsidized housing.  Founded in 1983, MAHT has saved and improved more than 12,600 apartments at risk of conversion to market rents, as permanently affordable housing, including 1,400 in resident-controlled ownership, through tenant organizing, one building at a time.  MAHT is the oldest and most accomplished local HUD tenants union nationwide.

MAHT also staffs the National Alliance of HUD Tenants (NAHT), the only nationwide tenants’ union in the US.  NAHT is governed by a separate, elected all-tenant Board.  NAHT’s national Network has met biweekly since 1995 and sponsors an annual Conference in Washington, DC, to represent HUD tenants with HUD, Congress, and other national organizations.

MAHT and NAHT have pioneered creative, progressive housing policies at the local, citywide, statewide, national and global levels, by mobilizing tenants to Save Our Homes. We are looking for full-time or part-time staff to help build MAHT and NAHTs tenant union membership, power, and effectiveness and sustain both organizations for the long haul.
