Save our Leatherbacks Operation (SOLO)

About Us

SOLO is a 501(c)(3) organization focused entirely on saving Leatherback Turtles, targeting the beaches of Papua Barat, Indonesia. These nesting beaches are vital to the survival of the leatherback, as they are one of the two remaining nesting beaches in the Pacific where the majority of Leatherback nesting occurs. In 1980, the leatherback turtle population exceeded 10 million. In the year 2000, it had fallen to less than 3000. Unless immediate action is taken, this 110 million year old species will be extinct in five years. It's easy to not care about the survival of an individual species, however fascinating and worthy, but our entire ocean ecosystem is intertwined, and the loss of even one species will irretrievably change our oceans, and affect the health of our planet as a whole.
