ABOUT THE JEWISH WOMEN’S FOUNDATION OF NEW YORK

The Jewish Women’s Foundation of New York (JWFNY) was founded by visionary women who saw that their dollars were not, through traditional funding apparatuses, going to support women and girls. They banded together in 1995 and created an organization that would support women on the ground using social change methodology and work to eradicate intractable problems with innovative solutions. Today, JWFNY is a catalyst for social innovation and gender justice, taking on issues such as advocating for paid parental leave in NYS—the first foundation to require leave policies as a prerequisite to funding. In the past few years, it has also addressed the lack of diversity in philanthropy, creating an initiative to engage some of the 33,000 Jewish women of color in the NY area. JWFNY also turned its attention to how women without children were treated by the Jewish community in an effort to encourage a more welcoming environment. Most recently, it envisioned and hosted a Town Hall in NYC that shined a light on the issues of gender harassment and abuse in Jewish communal life. Internationally, it supports work toward a civil society in Israel along with a variety of projects in the developing world, from the creation of composting toilets in Haiti to hand washing initiatives in India to maternal health in Uganda, all through the sponsorship of other visionary women.
