  • Mission

to empower Manatee County adults to independence through literacy.

    About Us

1 in 5 adults in the United States struggles with basic literacy and numeracy.

They read, write, or do math at or below a third-grade level. That means:

    • They may not be able to read a bus schedule or follow directions on a prescription bottle.

    • Filling out a job application or creating a resume can feel overwhelming.

    • Helping a child with homework becomes an impossible task.

    • Managing money, reading bills, or understanding rental agreements is a daily challenge.

These aren’t just skills - they’re essential tools for independence, employment, and participation in our communities. And when adults lack them, it affects not just their own lives, but their families and the local economy.

At the Manatee Literacy Council, we’re working to change this, but we can’t do it alone. We would love for you to join us in creating a stronger, more literate Manatee County.
