The mission of Caja Solidaria is to ensure everyone has access to the abundance the Southern Appalachians offer. We do this by sharing food with people whose health would benefit from free fruits and vegetables, healthy proteins, and whole grains. We want to be the people who listen, care, meet people where they are, and see those who aren’t used to being seen. By sharing food, we aim to foster a community of care, exercising cultural humility and treating everyone with dignity and respect. Caja has strong purchasing power, so we use that to influence and support local food systems through strong partnerships. We envision and strive to achieve a more healthy and resilient community and food system.

Caja Solidaria is a worker self-directed non-profit meaning all workers have the power to influence the programs in which they work, the conditions of their workplace, their own career paths, and the direction of the organization as a whole. To accomplish this, we emphasize dignity, accountability, transparency, shared leadership, and consent within all areas of focus. As an organization that prioritizes equity and inclusivity, we make decisions through the consensus process, which means that all staff must be in agreement before a major decision is executed.
