About Us

Domestic violence is a serious crime and public health problem, widespread and prevalent in every strata of society. Yet it is routinely discredited and ignored to the point where most victims of domestic violence suffer in silence, enduring unspeakable brutality and isolation in their own homes.

Narika was founded in 1992 to address the problem of domestic violence in the South Asian community in the San Francisco Bay Area. Embracing the notion of women’s empowerment, Narika addresses the needs of abused South Asian women by providing advocacy, support, information, and referrals within a culturally sensitive model. Narika serves women who originate from South Asian countries and the diasporas of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and have been victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or human trafficking. Over the past 24 years, Narika has helped thousands of women put the violence behind them and build new lives for themselves.
