About Us

The California Historical Radio Society (CHRS) is a non-profit educational organization founded in 1974 to promote the preservation, restoration, research and publication of early radio and broadcasting history. With more than 500 members and their generous support CHRS owns its historic building in central Alameda. CHRS was formed and exists today as a fraternal organization of radio and broadcast enthusiast members. As we approach our 50th anniversary the board is committed to extend our reach to become a more public historical asset and educational facility.

CHRS is more than a museum or a hobbyist organization. Our uniqueness comes from the breadth of the many areas of interest which feature research, publications and presentation groups. CHRS owns and supports organizations such as the Bay Area Broadcast Hall of Fame, Amateur Radio Station W6CF, The CHRS Library, The Society of Wireless Pioneers, 100 Years of Radio History Museum, and Education

Programs as eclectic as our radio restoration classes, a semi-annual color Journal and special original publications such as “Television.”

Our Radio Central facility also supports a fully functioning 1958 radio control room, audio digitization service and complete electronics and woodworking shops.
