    About Us

Morton Community and Learning Center (formerly known as Excel Community and Learning Center,) had its beginnings in Morton, MS as part of a Multicultural Neighborhood Initiative begun by the Sisters of St. Francis of Dubuque, IA in 1997. The need for a building to offer tutoring and classes soon became apparent and a building was purchased and remodeled. The building was occupied in the Fall of 1999. Initially, the decision was made to operate Excel Community and Learning Center under the umbrella of an existing non-profit organization called Excel, Inc. based in Okolona, MS. In September 2022, Excel in Morton began the process of filing as a separate nonprofit under the new name of Morton Community and Learning Center.

We achieve our mission by: sponsoring educational programs such as after school tutoring and summer learning camps for children and a variety of enriching and educational programs for adult learners; incorporating volunteer service across all activities of the organization; delivering prepared meals to area residents who are homebound; providing an affordable, centrally located meeting or gathering space; hosting periodic health screenings and vaccinations; informational sessions, community events and celebrations; connecting people to agencies, organizations and resources; and providing basic walk-in clerical services.
