    Prison Writes brings writing workshops to people who are incarcerated, detained and formerly incarcerated, their families and communities for therapy, advocacy, and literacy development. Our goal is to support participants in experiencing reading and writing as allies in their life pursuits.

    About Us

    Founded in 2015, we partner with government agencies, non for profits, colleges and universities to bring our writing workshops to people impacted by incarceration throughout New York City. Our workshops are evidence based, trauma informed and faciltiated by social workers and writing teachers to ensure participants social emotional as well as educational needs are addressed. We work with all ages and genders including children with parents who have experinced or are experiencing incarceration who are parents and caregivers. Literacy development is essential to navigating the world after prison and jail and achieving life goals. Literacy = Emancipation.
