About Us

The Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (“S.T.O.P.”) is a novel public interest, advocacy, and legal services organization, addressing state and local officials’ growing use of surveillance technologies. S.T.O.P. is hosted by the Urban Justice Center, providing services across New York State.

Anti-surveillance advocacy has historically targeted federal agencies, frequently ignoring the alarming growth in local and state surveillance. STOP pursues litigation, legislation, and advocacy work to implement protections against discriminatory, warrantless surveillance. STOP also prioritizes work responding to the impact of surveillance on communities of color, Muslims, and undocumented New Yorkers.
