About Us

The American Numismatic Society, founded in 1858, is one of the oldest museum in the United States. It is dedicated to the study and public appreciation of coins, currencies, medals, and other related objects. The Society has a collection of over 800,000 objects dating from 650 BC to the present. Its library and archives house approximately 100,000 books, documents, and artifacts. These resources are used to support publications of books and periodicals, lectures, academic seminars, and exhibitions. The Society has an active loan exhibition program, which helps other institution display coins and medals. Its publication program, which has been active since 1866, is one of the largest and prestigious in the world, while its Graduate Summer Seminar Program has taught numismatics to hundreds of prominent archaeologists and historians. Its staff is comprised for various international scholars and a small administrative staff.
