  • Mission

The mission of the Austin Steam Train Association is to preserve, interpret and re-create the first-hand experience of historic steam railroading for the enjoyment and edification of today's families and the generations to come.

    About Us

The Austin Steam Train Association (ASTA) is a volunteer-run, non-profit excursion railroad dedicated to the restoration and preservation of historic railroading. Our journey began with the Southern Pacific No. 786 locomotive, donated to the City of Austin in 1956, and a vision by local enthusiasts, led by Arthur U. Boone, to revive historic passenger rail in Central Texas. Since our first Hill Country Flyer departure in 1992, ASTA has welcomed about 30,000 passengers annually, bringing the charm of steam-era railroading to life with each ride. Today, our volunteers drive this legacy, helping us preserve history and build community memories for generations to come. Join us as a volunteer and become part of our story!
