Billion Oyster Project
- New York
Billion Oyster Project’s (BOP) long-term, large-scale plan is to restore a sustainable oyster population and to reconnect New Yorkers to their Harbor by engaging them directly in the work of restoring one billion oysters. In the process, BOP will educate thousands of young people in the Metropolitan area about the ecology of their local marine environment. Restoring oysters and reefs will restore the local marine ecosystem’s natural mechanisms for maintaining itself, resulting in cleaner water and greater biodiversity.
Our lead educational partner in New York City is the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School (“Harbor School”), a maritime public high school located on Governors Island in New York Harbor offering career and technical education (“CTE”) programs in marine science and technology. Students in Harbor School’s CTE programs are active participants in BOP.
