  • Mission

New Harmony Line is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization spun out of the M.I.T. Media Laboratory’s Opera of the Future group. Our mission is to bring the joy of artistic creativity into every young person’s life. We are driven by a passion to knock down the barriers that deprive millions of children and youths of an education that is enriched by music, where their unique stories and voice are valued and lifted up. This is about education that has meaning and purpose.

    About Us

The mission of New Harmony Line is to knock down barriers to musical creativity and participation by allowing anyone to compose music regardless of their background. The key is Hyperscore, a web-based, intuitive graphic interface developed at the MIT Media Lab, which empowers anyone to compose original music. It has been likened to Scratch but for music composition. Hyperscore compositions by children have been performed by elite orchestras around the world through composer Tod Machover’s Toy Symphony and City Symphony projects. Seniors in London used it to create "personal operas" about their memories of the 1948 Olympics. Users can immediately begin to create melodies and rhythmic patterns and assemble them into more complex compositions. This approach focuses on the essential: how does the music make you feel? Does your music express what you are trying to convey? Hyperscore has an outsized impact on disadvantaged children and youth and people with disabilities who often lack access to instruments and music lessons. We are helping young people in schools, clubs, and camps across the world express their experiences and vision through the universal language of music. The New Harmony Line team has led local, national, and international workshops, presented at conventions, and used Zoom for teacher training, camps, monthly podcasts and our Second Saturday Composition Workshops. We are offering our educational version, Hyperscore Classroom, for free to teachers and students worldwide.
