About Us

Why focus on climate and land use?

Forests protect the basic necessities of life – clean air, sources of water, food, medicines, and are home to an abundance of wildlife. Globally, over a billion rural people depend on forest resources for all or part of their livelihoods.

Yet, a growing global population is raising demand for more food, animal feed, fuel and fiber. This is driving large scale, commercial businesses into forests and other carbon-rich ecosystems, including those traditionally managed by indigenous peoples and local communities, to clear land for agriculture. The destruction of forests also releases greenhouse gases that cause climate change – which worsens global poverty and hunger, and threatens human health and security.

But increasing production need not require new land clearing. There are big opportunities to:

  • Shift the expansion of commodity production away from native forests and peatlands
  • Increase recognition of traditional peoples' rights to forest resources and lands
  • Establish policy incentives for reducing emissions
  • Increase transparency and strategic communications
  • Strengthen local capacity

Why a Climate and Land Use Alliance?

The Climate and Land Use Alliance was established to make grants and engage key experts and policy-makers to explore and develop solutions that realize the potential of forested landscapes to mitigate climate change, benefit people, and protect the environment. The Climate and Land Use Alliance is a collaborative initiative of the ClimateWorks Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

The Alliance's funding model is born from the belief that no single foundation or organization alone can address the many factors driving tropical deforestation and other land management changes. The Alliance has built a team with a breadth and depth of experience who are working to address this issue.

Geographically, the Alliance focuses on Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Central America, and the United States.
