Chateau is a rural community of approximately 12,000 people located some 20 miles from Les Cayes in the southern part of Haiti. It is in the mountains, about 1500 meters above sea level, several hours away from any basic services provided. There are no paved roads in the area, which means that people travel on foot, and people who are very sick often die before they can reach the hospital.
To address the gap in healthcare services, CORRECT Health in Haiti, Inc. was founded in 1998 to mobilize the necessary resources for a small medical clinic that serves the people of Chateau. Currently the clinic is staffed with a full-time doctor, three nurses and a lab technician. There is a small laboratory used to diagnose common illnesses in the region, such as malaria, anemia, and water-borne diseases.
