About the Organization:
Embark on a journey into shark conservation with the Shark & Marine Research Institute (SMRI). As a South African non-profit, SMRI is committed to researching and conserving diverse shark species along Cape Town's eastern coast.
In collaboration with Stellenbosch University and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE), we strive to inspire change and raise awareness in local coastal communities through educational outreach.
Established in 2015 by the White Shark Diving Company, SMRI serves as a global hub for shark enthusiasts, fostering learning and contribution to South African shark conservation. Open to both local and international students, we support students in fulfilling their university fieldwork requirements.
Join us in safeguarding these incredible creatures and the oceans they inhabit. Contact us to explore opportunities with the Shark & Marine Research Institute.
About the Program:
Prepare for the adventure of a lifetime! Our program, reliant on favorable weather, recommends a one-month commitment for a full experience.
A typical week is filled with activities, from shark cage diving to research trips, snorkeling, and catch-and-release tagging. Volunteers also participate in data days for entry and analysis, coupled with lectures and practical training on research techniques.
