The Sugar Beet Co-op

  • About Us

Started by a group of food-loving neighbors, The Sugar Beet Cooperative is building a new kind of grocery store in Oak Park by Summer 2014.

The Sugar Beet will be a community managed store, will sell food directly from local farms and producers, and will educate citizens about the importance of supporting farmers and the local economy. It will also include a commercial kitchen where our community can take classes on cooking and preserving, so that folks are able to eat locally year-round here in the Midwest.

The Sugar Beet Co-op will be a gathering place for people to grow, cook, discuss, and eat food together.

We started our work in January 2012 and are currently devleoping programming that supports our mission. We are cooperating with local organizations and businesses to facilitate and participate in workshops and conferences. We are also committed to raising membership and capital funds so that we can have a brick and mortar grocery store and community center by Summer 2014.

We hope to partner with people who are passionate about local food, community health, urban agriculture, youth programming, community building and restoring power to families and local economies.
