Phillips Black, Inc., is a nonprofit, public interest law practice dedicated to providing the highest quality of legal representation to prisoners in the United States sentenced to the severest penalties under law. At the heart of our work is a commitment to compassionate, meaningful advocacy on behalf of our clients, who are facing life in prison for a juvenile offense or the death penalty. Our principal attorneys are experts in complex, post-conviction litigation, meaning we do not shy away from taking on the most challenging cases, often in the most adverse jurisdictions. 

Beyond direct representation, Phillips Black further contributes to the rule of law by consulting with capital counsel, conducting death penalty clinical trainings, and developing research on the administration of criminal justice. Through these diverse strategies of driving change, our efforts have reached 25 states and counting, and every level of criminal defense litigation.
