Queens Library Jeanne Elmezzi Adult Learning Center
The Long Island City Adult Learning Center (Long Island City ALC) is part of the Queens Borough Public Library’s Adult Learner Program, and is located at the Long Island City Community Library. The Center provides resources to adult learners in various capacities. We maintain an extensive collection of print and electronic media resources. A variety of web-based distant learning resources and Multimedia materials to help adult immigrants learn English, and adult new readers navigate their community. The Long Island City ALC also offers a slew of programs targeted to helping members of the community enhance their upward mobility aspirations as well as provide professional materials for teachers and tutors. In addition, we have volunteers who conduct English conversation groups, and teach learners to read and write. Last year, the program served approximately 360 adults in the community.
The Adult Learning Center at Queens Library in Long Island City serves as multilingual information resource and referral centers, and provides immigrant families with a wide array of instructional, vocational, recreational, family support, and social services. Instructional services include: ABE (Adult Basic Education), Pre-HSE (High School Equivalency), ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Citizenship classes; as well as Job Readiness/Resume Preparation Workshops, Small Literacy/English Learning Groups, Computer-Assisted Instruction, Monthly Cultural Workshops & Center Outings, Independent Learning Materials, and an Extensive Book and Multimedia Collections.
