    New Roots Institute for the Study of Food Systems, based in Santa Cruz, California, is a center for innovative, interdisciplinary teaching and research on food systems. Our mission is to improve the social and ecological sustainability of food systems through experiential, multidimensional education and applied research. We are preparing a new generation of leaders to address complex issues around building equitable and sustainable food systems over the next century. Our courses, targeted to college undergraduates, focus on the linked issues of agroecological practices, food and farm policy, the political economy of food, social equity, biodiversity and ecosystem services.
