Daughters Beyond Incarceration

DBI works to support girls ages 8-18 that reside in low-income communities in New Orleans with a parent in prison. Our vision is to amplify and advocate for the unique lived experiences of young girls who are directly impacted by incarceration, to nurture the holistic healing needed to curtail varying levels of trauma our girls face as they are directly impacted by systemic oppression (i.e. mass incarceration), to empower our girls to become agents of social change within narrative, policy, and practice change within our city, state, and nation, to enhance the quality of the relationship between currently & formerly incarcerated parents and their children

Founded in May 2018, Daughters Beyond Incarceration is a youth-led nonprofit organization in New Orleans, Louisiana, dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and crime by advocating for girls with incarcerated parents and building strong parent-to-child relationships through public education, leadership development, and policy change. DBI serves girls ages 8–18 who are directly impacted by parental incarceration, providing safe spaces for healing, learning, and advocacy. Through its programming, DBI has helped pass Louisiana Act 284, creating the state's first Council for Children of Incarcerated Parents and Caregivers, and has successfully advocated for legislation to lower prison phone fees, improve visitation room conditions, and allow incarcerated parents to attend their children's graduations virtually.
