The Carter Center, Conflict Resolution, Liberia

About Us

The Carter Center, based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, is committed to advancing human rights and alleviating unnecessary human suffering. A functioning and equitable justice system in Liberia is essential to sustainable peace, democratic consolidation, and the protection of human rights. The Carter Center's Access to Justice project in Liberia works with the Government of Liberia to support the establishment of the rule of law, especially for citizens in rural areas. Issues of capacity building, civic education and the relationship between customary and formal legal systems are of particular focus. The project works on four inter-related areas: capacity building support to the formal justice system; civic education in eight counties; supporting community legal advice services; and helping to bridge gaps between formal and non-formal justice systems. In addition, the Carter Center has projects in Liberia in the areas of mental health and access to information.
