The Center for Literacy's mission is to provide free literacy instruction and a wide range of other services that respond to the diversity of individuals and enable adult learners to meet their goals.
The Center for Literacy was founded in West Philadelphia in 1968 by a group of citizens who were concerned about the low literacy rates among their neighbors. The agency began as a small tutoring program in a church basement, but has since expanded to include over 100 sites around Philadelphia, to offer a vast array of programs, and to serve thousands of learners every year.
