SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA AHEC (SEL-AHEC) HISTORY AND MISSION

 

·        In the early 70s, the federal government recognized the current and future primary and specialty healthcare shortages in the nations rural and underserved areas and populations; forming AHECs to address these needs. Specifically addressing healthcare disparities and inequities in minority populations

·        All AHECs must be affiliated with a Medical School in the state in which they reside. In 1989, SEL-AHEC was formed under the LSU NOLA School of Medicine. There are over 300 AHECs across America.

·        SEL- AHEC is a 501C3 Non-Profit Organization with Board of Directors. The largest of 4 AHECs in LA. 1989. 14 parish service area

·        Our mission is to enhance access to quality health care, particularly primary and preventative care, by improving the supply and distribution of health care professionals through community and academic educational partnerships to develop economic development programs and plans that promote a variety of activities thereby reducing barriers that hinder better health. SEL-AHEC is a bridge between education institutions, health care providers and communities. Focusing on improving the health of vulnerable populations in LA’s rural and underserved communities SEL-AHEC partners with various organizations to implement and operate activities and programs to improve health care for all.
