About Us

The mission of One Thousand Schools is to alleviate extreme poverty and violence in Honduras (Central America) through education and youth empowerment. We run a children's home and bilingual school in the village of Villa Soleada, located in El Progreso, Honduras. 6,000+ volunteers from all over the world have joined us in Honduras.

CNN Hero Shin Fujiyama and his classmates from college started the organization in 2007. The team is working towards a 100% graduation rate for the youth of Villa Soleada. They are also working with chapters and volunteers from all over the world to build 1,000 schools throughout Honduras. Other projects include teacher training, microfinance, anti-gang programs, youth soccer leagues, employment training, women's co-ops, youth scholarships. Learn more on our Facebook page.

The organization has been featured on CNN, CNN en español, Larry King Live, TV Tokyo, TEDx.

Around 90% of our on-the-ground staff are Honduran nationals. We try to uphold ourselves to the SIDEKICK MANIFESTO. Volunteer in Honduras and Central America with us.
