About Us

Building on the Children’s Storefront’s fifty-year history of changing lives in Harlem and the Bronx, founded on the belief that every child deserves an excellent education, we are launching our Early Childhood Initiative to ensure that the children whose lives we touch get the most out of their educational experience.

Science is now proving what we have known intuitively for many years: brain activity at a very early age impacts brain development in ways that last throughout life. The right sorts of activity prepare and mold the brain so that it absorbs, retains and processes information better; without that activation in the crucial early years, the opportunity to shape the brain and its future capabilities is lost.

The Storefront’s Early Childhood Initiative will not only provide that brain activity to very small children, but more importantly will teach parents and caregivers how to provide the engagement and interaction that is needed on a daily basis to ensure that the first three years of a child’s life are filled with the stimuli that optimize their brain’s development and allow them to maximize their educational opportunities.

Just as the Children’s Storefront was at the forefront of tuition-free private education Harlem, we are now at the forefront of free responsive parenting/caregiving education in Harlem. We are developing a replicable model for other neighborhoods, and anticipate that The Children’s Storefront Learning Center will be the first of several centers we will develop in Harlem and other parts of the city that will communicate brain development information and may also help mitigate the toxic effects of stress from poverty, abuse and other conditions.
