  • Mission

School of Ranch (www.schoolofranch.org) hires skilled locals to teach practical homestead skills at in-person workshops to newcomers to Central Oregon. Beyond teaching valuable skills, our mission it strengthen our community by connected newcomers and locals and create pathways to careers in the trades.

    About Us

School of Ranch fills a unique niche. We hire skilled locals to teach newcomers the skills they need to manage their land, animals, greenhouses and pastures. We teach them how to weld, manage irrigation, work with electricity and use machines. All in the name of community building.

We're in the midst of a great migration from urban to rural areas. People looking to slow down, reconnect with the land, do things with their hands. Rural life means self reliance - knowing how to use tools and machines, how to make things grow, how to raise healthy, happy animals. We started School of Ranch so we can learn these skills together.

While rural life builds self-reliance, to thrive rural areas need community. The building blocks of community are interpersonal relationships forged over common experiences and the willingness to lend a helping hand. We need to create those experiences and opportunities between urban newcomers and local residents, and that's what School of Ranch is really all about.

Seems like today we only hear about the things that divide us. School of Ranch unites people around things they have in common, the need to be able to fix a fence, care for aging horses, preserve food, and find someone to lend a hand when a hand is what it takes. By meeting people where they are, creating common experiences and enabling them to help each other learn, the ground is laid for welcoming, caring and resilient communities.
