Berkshire Music School is a small eighty-year-strong independent community non-profit located in Pittsfield, Massachusetts – the heart of the beautiful Berkshires. We serve the people of Western Massachusetts and eastern New York State, a population of about 150,000.
Local philanthropists founded Berkshire Music School in 1940, with a vision of providing music instruction to underserved area residents. Over the decades Berkshire Music School has expanded its offerings and widened its appeal so that all community members – from preschoolers to seniors – can engage in musical activities.
Through many changes in area demographics and economics, Berkshire Music School has had a consistent guiding principle: to foster the love and pursuit of music for all ages through quality music education activities, community collaborations, and performance opportunities.
Berkshire Music School, with an annual budget of about $500,000, currently serves 250 to 300 students of all ages. We offer private and group lessons, ensembles, workshops and classes; collaborations with area cultural organizations, social service agencies and senior centers/residences; in-house recitals, concerts and master classes. Our public school assemblies, after-school programs and offsite performances and residencies reach 2,000 school children and adult learners annually.
Berkshire Music School boasts 35 professional faculty members, who cover a wide range of instruments, as well as voice. Our centrally located campus comprises fourteen teaching studios, a studio devoted to percussion and a dance studio. We also have a 90-seat recital hall and a catering kitchen.
