  • Mission

The Highlands Historical Society exists to educate the community about the history and evolution of a Pennsylvania country estate, The Highlands, from 1794 to the present. Programs create participatory experiences for all visitors interested in architecture, horticulture, agriculture, local history and natural history. Comprehensive period documents guide the active reservation, restoration and interpretation of the mansion, gardens, outbuildings, farmland and open space.

    About Us

The Highlands Mansion and Gardens is an historical estate in Fort Washington, PA and was a private residence from 1796 to 1970. The Highlands Historical Society formed in the early 1970's consisting of neighbors that wanted to care for estate, restore the gardens and educate the community about the history of the families that lived here, the architecture and gardens. We hold fundraising events to raise money for continued preservation of this hidden gem of an estate. We rely on volunteers to help us keep the gardens looking its best as our grounds are open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. We also rent out the mansion and gardens for weddings, parties and events and all the proceeds go directly to the restorations.
