About Us

Visions Academy Charter High School is a tuition-free, open enrollment school of choice in Newark that began in the fall of 2010 with ninth grade. One grade is added each year until we reach capacity (600 students in grades 9-12). Our mission is to prepare all students academically and socially for success in college. College success requires character, community, confidence, curiosity, and respect – traits we instill in our students. Visions Academy seeks to cultivate an environment of high expectations for academics and conduct combined with caring relationships from teachers and staff that will help each student excel.

Visions Academy is seeking experienced full-time teachers who are highly qualified to teach at our school. This position will be staffed with a professional educator who has a proven track record of providing excellent learning experiences that utilize a variety of instructional strategies that deepen student understanding of key concepts. We anticipate candidates with superior content knowledge to collaborate with other classroom teachers in planning units that integrate learning and are aligned with state learning standards. Visions Academy views literacy as essential to helping students develop the reading and writing skills necessary in raising their academic performance.

Qualifications

Applicants are preferred to have the following qualifications:

  • NJ teaching certificate with appropriate secondary endorsement (requirement)
  • At least 2 years of teaching in an urban /high need school setting
  • NJ residency or the ability to obtain NJ residency within six months of hire
  • A proven track record of improving student achievement
  • A proven track record of collegiality and collaboration
  • Capabilities for motivating and engaging students in learning
  • Desire to be a reflective practitioner who implements cycles of inquiry; willingness to make learning explicit while encouraging others to do the same
  • Desire and ability to connect with students and build rapport with them
  • Experience developing and implementing a college-preparatory curriculum designed for a wide range of learners using the backwards mapping approach
  • Experience developing and implementing a standards-based curriculum
  • A commitment to teaching literacy across content areas
  • Experience with various assessment tools, including rubrics and portfolios
  • Experience designing project-based units
  • Effective classroom management skills and systems
  • Adaptability and resourcefulness necessary in a small school
  • Ability to integrate and infuse technology into the curriculum

Responsibilities

  • Develops a positive, orderly learning environment which engages students and maximizes on-task behavior
  • Develops lessons and student activities that progress coherently and are aligned with objectives and state standards
  • Meets the needs of all students by differentiating instructional delivery
  • Constructs, examines, and reconstructs real teaching and management experiences in and out of the classroom
  • Stimulates reflection by guiding students to explore areas of risk, discomfort, and opportunity
  • Receives professional development and coaching to improve practice
