About Us

The Averting Maternal Death and Disability Program (AMDD) at the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University is a global program of research, advocacy, policy analysis and program support dedicated to the reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity.

In the sixteen years since its founding, AMDD has worked in partnership with UN agencies, NGOs and governments in more than 50 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America with a focus on expanding availability, quality and utilization of emergency obstetric care (EmOC) as well as human resources for health, accountability, respectful maternity care and healthcare in urban settings. AMDD has played an important role in the growing respectful maternity care (RMC) movement globally and within the US.
