The only private medical school in the greater Southwest, Baylor College of Medicine was ranked 13th overall among the nation's top academic health science centers in the 2004 issue of U.S. News & World Report and 10th among U.S. medical schools for research funding from the National Institutes of Health, with total research support of $401.5 million in fiscal year 2004. The College includes 25 departments and more than 90 research and patient-care centers and is affiliated with seven teaching hospitals, which together admit more than 128,000 inpatients and record nearly 1.5 million outpatient visits each year.
