NYC Grassroots Media Coalition

About Us

In 2004 as a response to the FCC’s attempt to further deregulate media ownership rules, a group of media activists and organizers convened 1,000 media activists at the first NYC Grassroots Media Conference (GMC). The goal of the conference was to increase participation in media advocacy by creating strategic partnerships between community organizations, alternative media makers, institutional allies, and facilitating cross-cultural, and intergenerational dialogue around media issues. Building upon the success of this initiative, the organizers of the Conference formed the NYC Grassroots Media Coalition (NYCGMC). The NYCGMC has gone on to produce 4 more highly successful conferences, build a web portal and sponsor a regular networking event series entitled, “Make this netWORK.” The goal of the NYCGMC is to bring together independent and grassroots media makers with social justice organizers to create a more democratic and accountable media that better serves the social justice movement in New York City.
