About Us
FreeNK is a non-religious non-for profit non-govermental organisation based in New Malden, London in the UK and run by North Korean refugees.
FreeNK has its roots in the โNorth Korean Residents Society in UKโ and was established in May 2005 to let the world know about the most egregious human rights abuses that are happening in North Korea and to inform citizens inside North Korea of the outside worldโs news, to which they are denied by the state, and therefore guarantee their rights of freedom.
On June the 15th 2011 FreeNK separated itself from the โNorth Korean Residents Society in UKโ as an NGO dedicated to the improvement of human rights in North Korea and established our own online news website.
After 2 years, on July the 8th 2013, in commemoration of the 19th anniversary of the death of Kim-Il Sung, the patriarchal dictator of North Korea, FreeNK published its first newspaper.
Our newspaper is now published in both English and Korean on a fortnightly basis. We aim to help North Koreans realise their freedom through democratisation and inform the world of the plight of North Korean citizens and abuses by the North Korean regime. Our newspaper aims to provide North Koreans with outside Western news to which they are denied while both our website and newspaper inform Westerners of the atrocities within North Korea. Moreover both of our media outlets keep North Korean defectors living in Europe informed of news from their homeland.
We also participate in, and organise, local and international events with other NGOs and charities to help achieve the democratisation of North Korea. Furthermore we work together with the 2,000 North Korean defectors living in Europe and through empowering and educating the largest group of North Koreans outside of the Korean Peninsula intend to ensure the freedom of North Korean civilians.
Finally we educate and empower North Korean migrants to ensure real change within North Korea and the democratisation of the Korean peninsula.
